Sack Lunches

A heartwarming story to start your day...
I put my carry-on in the luggage compartment and sat down in my assigned seat. It was going to be a long flight. 'I'm glad I have a good book to read. Perhaps I will get a short nap,' I thought. Just before take-off, a line of soldiers came down the aisle and filled all the vacant seats, totally surrounding me. I decided to start a conversation. 'Where are you headed?' I asked the soldier seated nearest to me. 'Chicago - to Great Lakes Base. We'll be there for two weeks for special training, and then we're being deployed to Iraq ' After flying for about an hour, an announcement was made that sack lunches were available for five dollars. It would be a couple of hours before we reached Chicago, and I quickly decided a lunch would help pass the time. As I reached for my wallet, I overheard soldier ask his buddy if he planned to buy lunch. 'No, that seems like a lot of money for just a sack lunch. Probably wouldn't be worth five bucks. I'll wait till we get to Chicago ' His friend agreed. I looked around at the other soldiers. None were buying lunch. I walked to the back of the plane and handed the flight attendant a fifty dollar bill. 'Take a lunch to all those soldiers.' She grabbed my arms and squeezed tightly. Her eyes wet with tears, she thanked me. 'My son was a soldier in Iraq; it's almost like you are doing it for him.' Picking up ten sacks, she headed up the aisle to where the soldiers were seated. She stopped at my seat and asked, 'Which do you like best - beef or chicken?' 'Chicken,' I replied, wondering why she asked. She turned and went to the front of plane, returning a minute later with a dinner plate from first class. 'This is your thanks.' After we finished eating, I went again to the back of the plane, heading for the rest room. A man stopped me. 'I saw what you did. I want to be part of it. Here, take this.' He handed me twenty-five dollars. Soon after I returned to my seat, I saw the Flight Captain coming down the aisle, looking at the aisle numbers as he walked, I hoped he was not looking for me, but noticed he was looking at the numbers only on my side of the plane. When he got to my row he stopped, smiled, held out his hand, and said, 'I want to shake your hand.' Quickly unfastening my seatbelt I stood and took the Captain's hand. With a booming voice he said, 'I was a soldier and I was a military pilot. Once, someone bought me a lunch. It was an act of kindness I never forgot.' I was embarrassed when applause was heard from all of the passengers. Later I walked to the front of the plane so I could stretch my legs. A man who was seated about six rows in front of me reached out his hand, wanting to shake mine. He left another twenty-five dollars in my palm. When we landed in Chicago I gathered my belongings and started to deplane. Waiting just inside the airplane door was a man who stopped me, put something in my shirt pocket, turned, and walked away without saying a word. Another twenty-five dollars! Upon entering the terminal, I saw the soldiers gathering for their trip to the base. I walked over to them and handed them seventy-five dollars. 'It will take you some time to reach the base. It will be about time for a sandwich. God Bless You.' Ten young men left that flight feeling the love and respect of their fellow travelers. As I walked briskly to my car, I whispered a prayer for their safe return. These soldiers were giving their all for our country. I could only give them a sandwich. It seemed so little... A veteran is someone who, at one point in his life wrote a blank check made payable to'The United States of America ' for an amount of 'Up to and including my life.' That is Honor, and there are way too many people in This country who no longer understand it.'

Forgiveness

What is the purpose of forgiveness? Forgiveness is the miracle treatment for resentment and for all that ails us and robs us of our joy in life. Resentment keeps us isolated from God, that is, it keeps us from knowing the Truth of our Oneness with That Which creates us.

Forgiveness is not denying the past. It's denying the power of the past over our present and future life. Forgiveness is not absolving the offender. It is a willingness to let the past be okay just the way it happened. Forgiveness is not an event but a process. Forgiveness may not be quick, and it may not be easy; but ultimately it will save our life.

What happens when we forgive? By forgiving, we take back the power we gave to the world(the person) to do us harm. By forgiving, we release ourselves--and the one who has hurt us--from the prison of our resentment. By forgiving, we free ourselves to live in the now and enjoy the eternal blessings of the Kingdom of God now. By forgiving, we free ourselves to live in the Eternal Now, without holding on to the past. By forgiving, we acknowledge the Christ(the perfection) within ourselves and the offender.

In the Lord's Prayer, Jesus tells us we are to forgive others so that we can be forgiven: "Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors."

This is the world the way God made it. Every human being desires to be loved and to love. This is the way of life, and what we refuse to give we refuse to accept. Unfortunately, in our ignorance we have inhibited the action of God in our lives, and so we have cut ourselves off from the only Power that can help us.

True Love

It was a busy morning, about 8:30, when an elderly gentleman in his 80's arrived to have stitches removed from his thumb. He said he was in a hurry as he had an appointment at 9:00 am. The nurse took his vital signs and had him take a seat, knowing it would be over an hour before someone would be able to see him. She saw him looking at his watch and decided, since she was not busy with another patient, she would evaluate his wound. On exam, it was well healed, so she talked to one of the doctors, got the needed supplies to remove his sutures and redress his wound. While taking care of his wound, she asked him if he had another doctor's appointment this morning, as he was in such a hurry.

The gentleman told her no, that he needed to go to the nursing home to eat breakfast with his wife. He told her that she had been there for a while and that she was a victim of Alzheimer's Disease. As they talked, she asked if she would be upset if he was a bit late. He replied that she no longer knew who he was, that she had not recognized him in five years now. The nurse was surprised, and asked him, 'And you still go every morning, even though she doesn't know who you are?' He smiled as he patted her hand and said, 'She doesn't know me, but I still know who she is.' As he left the nurse thought to herself, "Now that is true love and the kind of love everyone desires in life."

True love is neither physical, nor romantic.

True love is an acceptance of all that is, has been, will be, and will not be.

The happiest people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the best of everything they have.

But how to dance in the rain.'

Fruit Of The Spirit

The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace.--Galatians 5:22

We should look across the new horizon of the greater possibility that resides within each of us and meet the living God and feel the embrace of God's Presence and come at last to know the infallibility of God's Power. From out of the great Mind that is God the way of life is made perfect and straight and immediate. It is made happy and whole and prosperous.

God's Love always embraces us, God's Wisdom is always within us, and God's Joy is ours to share.

Ask

Ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.--John 16:24

Nothing in our thought about God should produce sadness or depression; rather, it should do quite the reverse, because our faith in and love of God should give us such a confidence and such a sense of security that we should indeed be able to say: "Joy to the world, the Lord has come."

We must come to realize that God is not in some far-off place, but instead that God is an inward, intimate Presence closer to us than our very own breath. God is not nor can ever be separated from us, but too often we separate ourselves from God.

How Our Tax System Works

Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this: The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing. The fifth would pay $1. The sixth would pay $3. The seventh would pay $7. The eighth would pay $12. The ninth would pay $18. The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59. So, that's what they decided to do.

The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve. 'Since you are all such good customers, he said, 'I'm going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20. Drinks for the ten now cost just $80. The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes so the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free. But what about the other six men - the paying customers? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his 'fair share?' They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody's share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer. So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man's bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay.!

And so: The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings). The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33%savings). The seventh now pay $5 instead of $7 (28%savings). The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings). The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings). The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings). Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to drink for free.

But once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings. 'I only got a dollar out of the $20,'declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man,' but he got $10!' 'Yeah, that's right,' exclaimed the fifth man. 'I only saved a dollar, too. It's unfair that he got ten times more than I!' 'That's true!!' shouted the seventh man. 'Why should he get $10 back when I got only two? The wealthy get all the breaks!' 'Wait a minute,' yelled the first four men in unison. 'We didn't get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!' The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next night the tenth man didn't show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn't have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!

And that, boys and girls, journalists and college professors, is how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.

My Father's God

If you carry a light into a darkened room, the darkness is dissipated without effort on our part. So it is the experience of one who has a deep consciousness of Life. This was George J. Dunagan, my father. I never heard him utter a critical word about anyone. You would feel better by just sitting in his presence. Something invisible but all-penetrating flowed through his every look and gesture. He always greeted you with that big smile and you honestly felt that he cared about you. In his latter years when I would go visit him and ask him how he was doing he'd reply with a big smile, "I'm trying to stay sober" or he'd say, "I'm sober as a judge." The truth being that he never drink but he knew I did.

Understand that the Divine Spirit of God is not a mythical, mystical, abstract being, living somewhere above the Earth sitting on a throne watching the human drama of mankind unfold. God is a Divine Presence revealing Himself to everyone who believes. Where God is recognized, there is Life. Where the power of God is realized, there is action. Where the goodness of God is acknowledged, there is peace. My father knew this peace.

Wise Words

During this political season let's be reminded of these wise words.

  • You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.

  • You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.

  • You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.

  • You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.

  • You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.

  • You cannot build character and courage by taking away people's initiative and independence.

  • You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves.

Manifestation Of Spirit

Today and every day I commune with the invisible Presence within me until there comes a certainty that is beyond hope, something that enables me to see the future as clear-eyed as I see the past. I have the joy of knowing I will live forever. Jesus not only revealed this Truth in his teachings but he also demonstrated this Truth for the world at large to witness. I am aware of the Divine within me. Peace, quiet, and confidence become real in my thoughts. I know that inspiration and guidance is mine.

Today I lay aside every sense of burden and false responsibility, defeating all fear and uncertainty from my thoughts. I can see through all confusion to the one Divine Presence at the center of everything. I see through all apparent contradictions to the one Perfect Being in every person.

God's world is not a world of illusion, but of realities. All that exists is for the purpose of expressing Life, which is the Life of God. Nothing can be excluded from this omnipresence. It was this Presence that Moses communed with through the burning bush, the Divine Flame that surrounded the bush with an aura of light and color. This flame of Divinity penetrates everything and is in me and in you. God is ever flowing through me as perfect Life. I am a manifestation of God's energy, God's love, God's peace, and the power of God's Spirit. I am thankful this day and everyday that I am awakened to this revelation.

Create In Me A Pure Heart

Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit with me.--Psalm 51:10

Life is an adventure in which we never know what is going to happen just beyond the turn of the road. But too often our today is filled with regrets over the past. If we could convince ourselves that the limitations of the past need not be carried in to the future, what a happy outlook we would have.

One of the outstanding things that Jesus taught was that the mistakes of yesterday can be canceled, that God's creation is always taking place, being renewed, and, no matter what the experience of yesterday may have been, they can be changed.

Jesus did not seem to think that this change required months and years of strenuous effort on our part. Unlike those around him, he knew that God, and the Divine Spirit, wishes only Good for everyone and everything in the world God creates. Jesus also knew that we are all participants within the Perfect Life of God, and that any moment we can so unify ourselves with the Power of Good and God's indwelling Spirit causing all evil to disappear from our experience like a mist that evaporates into nothing.

Right Where You Are

Check out the cool dude from 1974! Michael, please tell me those are not white jeans!

Thought for Today: How can we expect to realize God in the emptiness of space if we have refused to see God in those we meet? And how can we find God in those we meet and in the events that transpire around us unless we first discovered God at the center of our own being? We cannot.

The starting point is at the center of our own being. When we awaken to the Divine within us, It will reach out and embrace everything around us, and we will discover the same Presence in people and in events and in all nature.

This is the secret that Jesus discovered. This is why he was able to speak as no other person ever spoke. This is why he was able to perform the miracles of love and healing, and in so doing prove a fact so simple, so fundatmental, but so powerful that people stand in awe before it--the simple fact that God is right where you are.

We are the clay, and thou our potter; and we are all the work of thy hand.--Isaiah 64:8

Good And Perfect

Today I expect and accept only good and perfect things being made manifest in my life. Knowing the Truth leads me into a more abundant life. Today I affirm that with God all things are possible. I am conscious that the reality of my being is not separated from the Divine nature of God. I am not only one with God, God is also one with me. Deliberately I turn to this inner Self, knowing that it has no problems. It is never poor, limited, sick, weak or unhappy. I accept and receive these Good and Perfect things with thanksgiving, finding joy and fulfillment in everything I do.

Well-being, wealth and prosperity is mine. Good is forever flowing, eternally manifesting itself in my life. My good flows to me from every source, because I recognize all sources as Divine. My hands open to receive and remain open that they may again give out and thus multiply the Divine Gifts that I receive.

Today the Truth leads me into the possession of everything necessary to my well-being here in my earthly existence. I think upon only things that are good and perfect. In doing this I become emancipated from any previous thoughts of bondage, lack, limitation, or fear. Today, everything in my experience is made new. Today, I expect and accept only good and perfect.

Make A Difference

As she stood in front of her 5th grade class on the very first day of school, she told the children an untruth. Like most teachers, she looked at her students and said that she loved them all the same. However, that was impossible, because there in the front row, slumped in his seat, was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard. Mrs. Thompson had watched Teddy the year before and noticed that he did not play well with the other children, that his clothes were messy and that he constantly needed a bath. In addition, Teddy could be unpleasant.

It got to the point where Mrs. Thompson would actually take delight in marking his papers with a broad red pen, making bold X's and then putting a big 'F' at the top of his papers. At the school where Mrs. Thompson taught, she was required to review each child's past records and she put Teddy's off until last. However, when she reviewed his file, she was in for a surprise.

Teddy's first grade teacher wrote, 'Teddy is a bright child with a ready laugh. He does his work neatly and has good manners... He is a joy to be around. 'His second grade teacher wrote, 'Teddy is an excellent student, well liked by his classmates, but he is troubled because his mother has a terminal illness and life at home must be a struggle.' His third grade teacher wrote, 'His mother's death has been hard on him. He tries to do his best, but his father doesn't show much interest, and his home life will soon affect him if some steps aren't taken.' Teddy's fourth grade teacher wrote, 'Teddy is withdrawn and doesn't show much interest in school. He doesn't have many friends and he sometimes sleeps in class.'

By now, Mrs. Thompson realized the problem and she was ashamed of herself. She felt even worse when her students brought her ChristmasPresents, wrapped in beautiful ribbons and bright paper, except for Teddy's. His present was clumsily wrapped in the heavy, brown paper that he got from a grocery bag. Mrs.Thompson took pains to open it in the middle of the other presents. Some of the children started to laugh when she found a rhinestone bracelet with some of the stones missing, and a bottle that was one-quarter full of perfume. But she stifled the children's laughter when she exclaimed how pretty the bracelet was, putting it on, and dabbing some of the perfume on her wrist. Teddy Stoddard stayed after school that day just long enough to say, 'Mrs. Thompson, today you smelled just like my Mom used to.'

After the children left, she cried for at least an hour. On that day, she quit teaching reading, writing and arithmetic. Instead, she began to teach children. Mrs. Thompson paid particular attention to Teddy. As she worked with him, his mind seemed to come alive. The more she encouraged him, the faster he responded. By the end of theYear, Teddy had become one of the smartest children in the class and, despite her lie that she would love all the children the same, Teddy became one of her 'teacher's pets..'

A year later, she found a note under her door, from Teddy, telling her that she was the best teacher he ever had in his whole life. Six years went by before she got another note from Teddy. He then wrote that he had finished high school, third in his class, and she was still the best teacher he ever had in life. Four years after that, she got another letter, saying that while things had been tough at times, he'd stayed in school, had stuck with it, and would soon graduate from college with honors. He assured Mrs. Thompson that she was still the best and favorite teacher he had ever had in his whole life. Then four more years passed and yet another letter came. This time he explained that after he had gotten his bachelor's degree, he decided to go a little further. The letter explained that she was still the best and favorite teacher he ever had. But now his name was a little longer... The letter was signed, Theodore F. Stoddard, MD.

The story does not end there. You see, there was yet another letter that spring. Teddy said he had met this girl and was going to be married. He explained that his father had died a couple of years ago and he was wondering if Mrs. Thompson might agree to sit at the wedding in the place that was usually reserved for the mother of the Groom. Of course, Mrs. Thompson did. And guess what? She wore that bracelet, the one with several rhinestones missing. Moreover, she made sure she was wearing the perfume that Teddy remembered his Mother wearing on their last Christmas together.

They hugged each other, and Dr. Stoddard whispered in Mrs. Thompson's ear, 'Thank you Mrs. Thompson for believing in me. Thank you so much for making me feel important and showing me that I could make a difference.' Mrs. Thompson, with tears in her eyes, whispered back. She said, 'Teddy, you have it all wrong. You were the one who taught me that I could make a difference. I didn't know how to teach until I met you.'

(For you that don't know, Teddy Stoddard is the Dr. at Iowa Methodist in Des Moines that has the Stoddard Cancer Wing .) This story reminds me of my mother and father who were both school teachers and loved teaching children. There is no way to measure how many lives they impacted over the many years they taught. Every day we should try to make a positive difference in someone's life.

Nature's Pharmacy

The Mind of God has given us great clues as to what foods help what part of our body.

A sliced Carrot looks like the human eye. The pupil, iris and radiating lines look just like the human eye... and YES, science now shows carrots greatly enhance blood flow to and function of the eyes.

A Tomato has four chambers and is red. The heart has four chambers and is red. All of the research shows tomatoes are loaded with lycopine and are indeed pure heart and blood food.

Grapes hang in a cluster that has the shape of the heart. Each grape looks like a blood cell and all of the research today shows grapes are also profound heart and blood vitalizing food.

A Walnut looks like a little brain, a left and right hemisphere, upper cerebrums and lower cerebellums. Even the wrinkles or folds on the nut are just like the neo-cortex. We now know walnuts help develop more than three (3) dozen neuron-transmitters for brain function.

Kidney Beans actually heal and help maintain kidney function and yes, they look exactly like the human kidneys.

Celery, Bok Choy, Rhubarb and many more look just like bones. These foods specifically target bone strength. Bones are 23% sodium and these foods are 23% sodium. If you don't have enough sodium in your diet, the body pulls it from the bones, thus making them weak. These foods replenish the skeletal needs of the body.

Avocadoes, Eggplant and Pears target the health and function of the womb and cervix of the female - they look just like these organs. Today's research shows that when a woman eats one avocado a week, it balances hormones, sheds unwanted birth weight, and prevents cervical cancers. And how profound is this? It takes exactly nine (9) months to grow an avocado from blossom to ripened fruit. There are over 14,000 photolytic chemical constituents of nutrition in each one of these foods (modern science has only studied and named about 141 of them).

Figs are full of seeds and hang in twos when they grow. Figs increase the mobility of male sperm and increase the numbers of Sperm as well to overcome male sterility.

Sweet Potatoes look like the pancreas and actually balance the glycemic index of diabetics.

Olives assist the health and function of the ovaries.

Oranges, Grapefruits, and other Citrus fruits look just like the mammary glands of the female and actually assist the health of the breasts and the movement of lymph in and out of the breasts.

Onions look like the body's cells. Today's research shows onions help clear waste materials from all of the body cells. They even produce tears which wash the epithelial layers of the eyes. A working companion, Garlic, also helps eliminate waste materials and dangerous free radicals from the body.

Free At Last

"Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free." I am convinced that the truth, to which Jesus referred, is the reality of knowing that the Spirit within me, being God, cannot be limited in any way. Today I drop every sense of bondage from my mind. Consciously I open my thought to this Divine reality. I know that limitation and fear do not exist in God's kingdom. I know that even as the sun melts ice, so the Light of the Spirit within me dissolves every obstruction in my path. Everything unlike the perfect nature of God in me disappears. Today my entire thought, will, and imagination are saturated with the Divine Presence, which forever proclaims, "Behold, I make all things new."

Today I let nothing enter my thought that would contradict the all-ness and the goodness of the Spirit of God. The Divine Shepherd is ever with me, guiding, counseling, and leading me into pathways of peace, freedom, and security. My cup of joy runs over with the gifts of Life. Without reservation I accept them. The Spirit of God within me is free!

God Strengthens Me

"Fear thou not for I am with thee.....I will strengthen thee.....I will uphold thee......I, the Lord thy God, will hold thy right hand."

When we turn from the error of all belief in separateness, we find the indwelling Spirit of God. It has always been there. When we have dismissed all fear from our thoughts, then we know that God is Love. When we have turned away from every sense of weakness, we know that God is Strength. This thought fills me with confidence and courage. Resting securely in this knowledge, I am renewed, guided, and led step by step by the power of an ever-present Love.

Today, I permit the Divine Spirit to flow through me. Rejoicing in Its presence, I am free from fear. I live in perfect faith. There is but One Power and Presence in the universe, which is God, the living Spirit Almighty. Today I shall not doubt nor fear anything. God within me strengthens me.

Desires Of My Heart

Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.--Psalm 37:4

When the dawn breaks and the shadows flee, when the hills are touched with rosy glow of the sun's first rays, I wake to the thought that I am one with all life. I lift mine eyes to the Eastern sky and sing with the joy of one who beholds the Eternal Presence in everything. In everything I do I sense the Divine Presence, sustaining, upholding, and guiding me. I permit my mind to become totally saturated with this Divine Ideal.

I know that there is a Divine Pilot steering my boat safely to a harbor of peace, to an environment of happiness, and to a haven of good. Therefore, I am not afraid, even when the billows roll and the wind sweeps by, for there is a Divine hand guiding my ship; there is an invisible Presence at the wheel. I lift the sails of faith and let the winds of love fill them with the mighty power of the Divine Presence of God. My boat rides upon a sea of Pure Spirit and finds safe anchorage everywhere, always.--Ernest Holmes

Affirmation: I am guided by Divine Intelligence, which goes before me and makes perfect my way. I have a Divine Right to rise above all fear, impoverishment, and limitation. Today I exercise dominion over my environment, over every circumstance and condition that I face. The joy of life flows into my thought and my work. Peace and harmony attend everything I do. Love and protection are ever present. Today I know that every desire of my heart is fulfilled. This day only love, joy, peace, happiness, good health, wealth and prosperity are made manifest in my life and in the life of my family.
